Heav’n Bound Soldier

Traditional Spiritual

“Hold out your light, you heav’n bound soldier, let your light shine around the world….”

Noah Brooks

A traditional spiritual, its simple words dovetail with the black man’s acceptance into the fighting ranks of Union soldiers. In the show, “Heav’n Bound Soldier” is sung as the finale to Act I in counterpoint to “Battle Cry of Freedom,” as the North at last allows blacks to join the fight.

Lyrics

Hold out your light, you heav’n bound soldier,
Hold out your light, you heav’n bound soldier,
Hold out your light, you heav’n bound soldier,
Let your light shine around the world.

Oh, deacon, can’t you hold out your light,
Oh, deacon, can’t you hold out your light,
Oh, deacon, can’t you hold out your light,
Let your light shine around the world.
